LOWER GALLATIN TMDL DOCUMENT

The "Lower Gallatin Planning Area TMDLs & Framework Water Quality Improvement Plan" was approved by EPA on March 28, 2013. The final document can be found on DEQ's Final TMDL Documents website at: http://deq.mt.gov/wqinfo/TMDL/finalReports.mcpx. Responses to comments can be found in Appendix H.

If you have questions, please contact Christian Schmidt at cschmidt2@mt.gov or (406) 444-6777.

The stakeholder review draft version of the document has been removed from this page. Descriptions of the document sections can still be found below.

Appendix

Appendix Description

Appendix A: Tables & Figures

Contains Table A-1 and all maps and figures for the Lower Gallatin Watershed Description found in Section 2.0 of the document.

Appendix B: Regulatory Framework & Reference Condition Approach

Contains more detailed information about legal requirements for developing TMDLs; Montana’s sediment, nutrient, and pathogen water quality standards; and the approach taken to evaluate reference conditions.

Appendix C: Road Sediment Assessment

Contains a sediment load analysis and culvert assessment for the road network in the Lower Gallatin River TMDL Planning Area.

Appendix D: Sediment Daily Loads

Contains the sediment TMDLs expressed as daily loads (tons/day). Section 5.0 of the document expresses the sediment TMDLs in tons/year.

Appendix E: Hyalite Creek Nutrient Listing History and TMDL Development

Outlines the impairment listing history of Hyalite Creek and the reasoning and support behind the decision to address a nutrient impairment on the lower segment of Hyalite Creek.

Appendix F: Nutrient Existing Load Source Assessment in the Lower Gallatin TMDL Planning Area

Outlines the process by which existing nutrient loads were quantified and allocated to nonpoint sources in impaired stream segments at baseflow conditions.

Attachment

Attachment Description

Attachment A: Sediment and Habitat Data and Bank Erosion Assessment

A detailed sediment and habitat assessment of streams was conducted to facilitate development of the sediment TMDLs. This appendix summarizes the aerial assessment reach stratification, sediment and habitat assessment, and streambank erosion assessment methods used for this process.

Attachment B: 2009 Lower Gallatin TMDL Planning Area Nutrient, Algae, and E. Coli Source Assessment

Contains the results of a 2009 GIS and field-based pollutant source assessment was completed on twelve streams in the Lower Gallatin TMDL Planning Area.

Attachment C: Upland Sediment Assessment

Sediment loading from hillslope erosion was modeled using a universal soil loss equation based model that was combined with a sediment delivery ratio and a riparian health assessment to predict sediment delivery to streams. This report presents the results of this assessment and modeling effort.

Attachment D: Scientific and Technical Basis of the Numeric Nutrient Criteria for Montana’s Wadeable Streams and Rivers: Addendum 1, May 2012

This document is the first update by the Dept. of Environmental Quality to the numeric nutrient criteria recommendations it made in 2008.
