Kootenai - Fisher TMDL Document

Metals, nutrients, sediment, and temperature total maximum daily loads (TMDLs) were completed for streams within the Kootenai River and Fisher River watersheds in May of 2014. The "Kootenai-Fisher Project Area Metals, Nutrients, Sediment, and Temperature TMDLs and Water Quality Improvement Plan" is located on DEQ's Final TMDL Documents webpage. Copies of the document are also available at the Libby and Troy public libraries and at the state library in Helena.

Map of 2011 Metals Monitoring Locations (80 KB)

Map of 2011 Nutrient Monitoring Locations (68 KB)

This document defines the project description, sampling locations, the field sampling methods, laboratory analytical procedures, and quality assurance and control requirements for metals and nutrient monitoring conducted in the Kootenai-Fisher TMDL Project Area in 2011 and 2012. Note that this SAP also includes the Thompson TMDL Project Area.

Table & Map of 2012 Metals Monitoring Locations on Bear, Fairway, and Stanley creeks (0.2 MB)

A table and map showing 2012 metals sampling locations on Bear, Fairway, and Stanley creeks. These sites were sampled once during September of 2012 as part of a separate SAP than the one posted above. Note that the site coordinates given in the table are not the actual field-recorded locations. Actual sample site locations may vary from those in the table.

Spreadsheet of 2011 Metals & Nutrient Data (218 KB)

To download: Click on the link above. A new browser window will open. Then click on "DOWNLOAD" located next to the "VIEW" tab. "DOWNLOAD" is in black letters against a dark blue background.

One event (low-flow) of metals sampling was completed in 2011. Data from the 2011 sampling is contained in the spreadsheet.

2011

Spreadsheet of 2012 Metals & Nutrient Data (1.47 MB) Four rounds of nutrient sampling and two rounds of metals sampling were completed in 2012. The spreadsheet contains both a condensed version of the data, and the data with all attributes. 2012

Raven Creek Nutrient Data Collected in 2013

MS Excel Spreadsheet (31 kb)

PDF File (44 kb)

Additional nutrient data was collected on Raven Creek in July and August of 2013 for the purpose of conducting another nutrient impairment assessment. 2013

Nutrient & Metals Water Quality Assessment Methods:

http://deq.mt.gov/wqinfo/qaprogram/sops.mcpx

DEQ's assessment methods for determining surface water metals impairments and nutrient impairments of wadeable streams. These methods were used to make nutrient and metals impairment determinations for sampled streams in the Kootenai and Fisher river watersheds.

Montana's Numeric Water Quality Standards (Cirucular DEQ-7)

Draft Numeric Nutrient Criteria (Circular DEQ-12)

"Circular DEQ-7, Montana Numeric Water Quality Standards" contains numeric water quality standards for metals parameters.

"Draft Circular DEQ-12, Montana Base Numeric Nutrient Standards and Nutrients Standards Variance" contains draft nutrient water quality standards including concentration limits, where they apply, and their period of application.

Sampling & Analysis Plan for Sediment and Habitat Assessment (612 kb)

Instream fine sediment data was collected and streambank erosion assessments were performed during the summer of 2011. This document defines the sampling objectives, sampling process and methods, and data analysis and record keeping requirements.

October 2011

Sediment and Habitat Assessment and Streambank Erosion Assessment

(See Attachment A of the final TMDL document)

Attachment A of the final TMDL document summarizes the methods used and the data that was collected from the 2011 sediment and habitat assessment field work.  A map of sampled sites is included in the report. This document also includes existing sediment loading rates from streambanks, and sediment load reduction scenarios that may be attainable through the implementation of riparian best management practices.

Road Sediment Assessment & Modeling: Road GIS Layers & Summary Statistics (507 kb)

This report details the various GIS layers and existing datasets that were used in the road assessment, as well as road summary statistics for the Kootenai – Fisher TMDL project area. This assessment was used to support sediment source modeling for roads using a WEPP model.

November 2011

Roads Sediment Assessment

(See Appendix D of the final TMDL document)

Data was collected during the summer of 2011 and modeled to provide an assessment of the amount of sediment contribution from unpaved roads in the project area. Appendix D to the final TMDL document summarizes the results and also includes an assessment of culverts.

May 2014

Upland Sediment Assessment & USLE Modeling

(See Appendix C of the final TMDL document)

A simple model was used to provide an assessment of existing sediment loading from upland sources and an assessment of potential sediment loading after the application of best management practices. Appendix C of the final TMDL document provides the upland erosion sediment assessment.

Summary of 2011 Macroinvertebrate & Periphyton Sampling (0.4 MB)

This report summarizes the results of biological sampling conducted in the Fisher and Kootenai River watersheds in 2011. The report describes the methods used to collect macroinvertebrate and periphyton samples, and identifies the collected taxa.

Note that the periphyton impairment percentages presented in the report are entered incorrectly and are impairment percentages for nutrients, and not sediment.

Temperature Assessment Report

(Appendix G of the final TMDL document)

Appendix G of the final TMDL document summarize the data collected in 2012 in accordance with the above SAP, and includes a map of monitoring locations. The collected data was used in a QUAL2K model to assess the influence of shading and streamflow on stream temperatures, and the appendix discusses the results of this assessment.
